Lower Beverley Lake

3-Year Comparative Weekly Water Clarity Trends

The annual Secchi disc data represent the average of weekly samples taken through each summer. It is interesting to see the change in water clarity as the lake progresses through its seasonal cycle. Experience in 2002 was reassuring, in that clarity measurements were the best ever recorded in Lower Beverley Lake. However, water levels varied widely, surging to abnormally high levels in June followed by extraordinarily low levels in August. Early season measurements were at the threshold [3.0 Litres] between “enriched” [high nutrients] and “moderately enriched”, better than experienced in prior years. Measurements through July and August also compared favorably to prior years with many samples falling in the “moderately enriched” range, reflecting the benefits resulting from low rainfall/low water levels with nutrients holding on shorelines and wetland areas.

We are listed in the 2002 MOE/Lake Partner Program report as being among a few lakes that have consistently gained water clarity since 1996. Zebra mussels have recently invaded many of these lakes, including Lower Beverley.

SECCHI READING LAKE NUTRIENT STATUS
Over 5m Oligotropic - unenriched, few nutrients
3.0m to 4.9m Mesotropic- moderately enriched, some nutrients
Less than 2.9m Eutropic - enriched, higher levels of nutrients
